Brooks recently celebrated his fifth birthday. It feels like yesterday when he was just a baby and we were setting up his nursery. I have the best memories of bedtime stories and cuddles on his rocking chair, and him scooting around in his sleep sack to get one mo’ book to read. Ok, I digress.

After we moved to New Hampshire, I had plans to create a fun and inspiring big kid room for him, but between life flying by and my decision paralysis, we never got around to it–until now. So here is our starting point, a blank slate.

Brooks has many passions: dinosaurs, sea animals, insects, drawing, camping, and more. I decided to scratch the idea of a single “theme”, and instead focus on a primary color scheme where we could mix and match bedding, art, and decor with all of his interests.
The new focal point in his room is a single wall with wide beadboard trim in a deep blue-grey. The color is Distance, by Sherwin Williams. We found this trim at Lowes in store. The wide profile beadboard slightly resembles a vertical shiplap, but is a beadboard style that works well in our colonial style home. It is a large 4’x8′ MDF board that we trimmed to approximately two-thirds of the wall height.

When I saw this little kid’s bedroom photo from @forricherdorpoorer, I knew Brooks also needed a pair of red wall lamps for his late night drawing and reading.

I found these farmhouse style sconces on Amazon. They were more burgundy than I anticipated, but nothing a few spritzes of red spray paint couldn’t fix. I used the most standard red I could find. I believe this is Krylon Red Pepper.

We installed the sconces directly in the wall without doing any electric hookups. We were not ready to commit to any hard wiring for this room update. Instead, we will be using rechargeable battery operated light bulbs.
The rest of the room is tied together with some new additions, including this sweet cloth tent (another Amazon find) and a 4×6 navy striped rug, as well as some items we already owned. The oversized chair gifted from an older cousin, Ikea frames, and wall decor from Etsy have served us well through the years.

We purchased this green dresser years ago from Facebook Marketplace. I love the color, but the dresser is in poor condition and the paint is chipping. We are in the process of refinishing another second-hand dresser. I think all of us are looking forward to having fully functional drawers.
Finally, my beloved Hudson Bay Point blanket. This was an amazing score from an estate sale in Illinois.

We surprised Brooks with his mini room makeover, and he was thrilled!

Thanks for following along!
xoxo Paige
